One Night with Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin may no longer be hypnotizing audiences with her edgy and soulful performances, but the electrifying music icon who paved the way for many of today’s female rock artists is being brought to life at Arena Stage this fall, in conjunction with Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power, currently on view at NMWA. Fresh off its acclaimed run at the Cleveland Play House, where The Plain Dealer called it “a feel-good, fist pumping, must-see concert,” One Night with Janis Joplin takes D.C. audiences on a musical journey into the life and inspirations of one of rock ’n’ roll’s greatest legends.

With the full support of Janis Joplin’s siblings Laura and Michael Joplin, playwright/director Randy Johnson received unprecedented access to the Joplin family archives to create One Night with Janis Joplin, which enabled him to give audiences a profound immersion into this blues-belting innovator’s musical brilliance. Mary Bridget Davies, who tours with Joplin’s original band, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and previously played Joplin on the national tour of Love, Janis, stars as the rock ’n’ roll legend. Sabrina Elayne Carten portrays the Blues Singer, a character who pays homage to the blues trailblazers who influenced Joplin, including Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Etta James, and Bessie Smith.

Featuring “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” and “Cry Baby,” along with music never formally recorded by Joplin, One Night with Janis Joplin runs September 28–November 4, 2012 at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Tickets may be purchased online at arenastage.org, by phone at 202-488-3300, or at the Sales Office at 1101 Sixth St., SW, D.C.
